BIJUT COLLECTION feature in SDVOYAGER

Today we'd like to introduce you to Carmen Layton.

Hi Carmen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Bucharest, Romania and moved to the United States at 19 years old in search of new opportunities and a bigger life. Starting over in a new country taught me resilience quickly. Like many immigrants, I had to adapt, rebuild, and navigate an entirely different culture while learning to trust myself and keep moving forward.

Before launching BIJUT Collection, I spent years working in self-driving AI project management and operations, which gave me a strong foundation in organization, customer experience, and building things intentionally. At the same time, I always had a deeply creative side and a love for meaningful jewelry, symbolism, fashion, and pieces that tell a story.

What started as designing jewelry with authentic crystals and meaningful elements gradually evolved into something much bigger. When I discovered permanent jewelry, I immediately saw the potential to create an experience rather than simply sell jewelry. I wanted people to leave with something personal, whether it symbolized a milestone, friendship, memory, or simply a version of themselves they wanted to carry with them every day.

BIJUT Collection was built alongside my husband, Kevin, who has been an incredible part of this journey and helps bring the vision to life in so many ways, from events and logistics to creating the atmosphere that makes the experience feel special. Together, we envisioned something completely different from a traditional jewelry store. We wanted to create an elevated, exclusive, and memorable experience where people genuinely wanted to spend time.

That vision is what led us to open BIJUT Collection inside our warehouse loft in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. The location is very intentional. We wanted it to feel like discovering a hidden gem, a creative and intimate space that feels unlike anything else. We are also proud to be the first brick-and-mortar permanent jewelry location in the Gaslamp, helping introduce a new kind of jewelry experience to the neighborhood.

Of course, a huge part of the experience is also our two French bulldogs, who have become unofficial BIJUT mascots. Customers absolutely adore them, and they somehow always know how to make people feel at home. It has created an atmosphere that feels warm, welcoming, and personal from the moment someone walks in.

Today, seeing BIJUT grow, including expanding into New Mexico, feels incredibly rewarding. At its core, our mission has remained the same: to create jewelry people truly live in while offering an experience that feels intentional, elevated, and genuinely memorable.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and I think that is true for most entrepreneurs.

One of the biggest challenges was the level of risk we took in the beginning. BIJUT was built around a very unconventional vision. We intentionally chose a hidden gem warehouse loft concept instead of a traditional storefront because we wanted the experience to feel exclusive, unexpected, and unlike anything else in the jewelry space. But with that came a lot of uncertainty.

I invested essentially my entire savings into building a business that, at the time, I had no guarantee would still exist a year later. That level of risk was incredibly stressful. There were many moments where I questioned whether people would understand the vision, discover us, or connect with the type of experience we were trying to create.

Because of that, we had to become extremely proactive and creative when it came to growth. We became very intentional about partnerships, collaborations, social media, content creation, local visibility, events, and finding ways to consistently stay top of mind. Since we are not a traditional walk-by storefront, we quickly learned that visibility had to be created, not waited for.

There have definitely been challenges along the way, but looking back, those pressures forced us to become more innovative, more resourceful, and much more connected to our community. In many ways, the struggles shaped what makes BIJUT special today.

As you know, we're big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What we do at BIJUT Collection goes far beyond jewelry. While we specialize in permanent jewelry, custom pieces, and meaningful adornment, what we are truly creating is an intentional experience centered around symbolism, connection, and self-expression.

One thing that sets us apart is that I am also a trained silversmith, which means I have extensive hands-on training in jewelry craftsmanship and am professionally certified to do this work. That foundation gives me a very different perspective when it comes to metals, quality, construction, wearability, and customization. In an industry that has grown very quickly, having formal training and a deep understanding of jewelry itself has been incredibly important to me.

I also bring an extensive corporate and entrepreneurial background into BIJUT. Before this business, I worked in operations and project management and owned multiple businesses. While not every venture succeeded, each one taught me invaluable lessons about customer experience, branding, resilience, and how to build something with intention. Those experiences shaped how I approach BIJUT today.

We are also very intentional about how and where we show up. Because we have a brick-and-mortar presence and have carefully built an immersive experience inside our warehouse loft in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, we are selective about events and collaborations. We do not typically participate in traditional markets unless it is a very aligned partnership because preserving the experience and energy of what we have built matters deeply to us.

Our vision from the beginning was to create something completely different from a traditional jewelry store. We intentionally chose a hidden-gem warehouse loft concept to feel exclusive, memorable, and unlike anything else in the permanent jewelry space. As the first brick-and-mortar permanent jewelry location in Gaslamp, we wanted people to feel like they had discovered something special.

More than anything, we view permanent jewelry as a ritual of commitment, whether that is commitment to yourself, a relationship, a friendship, a milestone, healing, or simply honoring a new chapter. The jewelry becomes symbolic, but the experience itself becomes the memory.

I think what sets BIJUT apart most is how intentional we are with every detail. From the chains we curate, to the atmosphere we create, to the way we guide people through choosing a piece that feels meaningful to them, nothing is accidental. We want people to leave feeling like they experienced something, not just bought something.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would probably say resilience, adaptability, and trusting my intuition.

Entrepreneurship constantly asks you to evolve. There are seasons where things are growing quickly, seasons that challenge you, unexpected obstacles, market shifts, and moments where you have to make difficult decisions without having a perfect roadmap. I think one of the biggest reasons I have been able to continue growing is because I have learned how to adapt without losing sight of the bigger vision.

Resilience has been especially important. Moving to a new country at a young age, navigating different industries, building businesses, learning from failures, and ultimately taking a huge financial risk on BIJUT taught me that setbacks are often lessons in disguise. I have learned to view challenges as information rather than reasons to quit.

At the same time, intuition has played a huge role in my success. Many of the biggest decisions behind BIJUT did not necessarily make sense on paper at first, choosing a hidden warehouse loft, building an experience-first concept, leaning into a more elevated and intentional approach, or being selective about how we grow. But I trusted the vision, even when it felt unconventional.

Above all, I think intentionality has been one of the biggest differentiators. I care deeply about the details, the customer experience, the atmosphere, the meaning behind what we do, and making sure everything feels aligned with the bigger mission. I truly believe people can feel when something has been built with care.
